North Kalimantan

North Kalimantan is an Indonesian province on northeastern Borneo, bordering Sabah, Sarawak, and the Celebes Sea. Established in 2012, it is Indonesia’s newest province.

Tarakan: Tarakan is an Indonesian island city and the largest urban center in North Kalimantan. It is the province’s principal city and a major gateway for travel and trade.
East Kalimantan: East Kalimantan is an Indonesian province on the eastern side of Borneo. North Kalimantan was separated from this province when it was established.
Entikong–Tebedu border crossing: The Entikong–Tebedu border crossing is a road checkpoint between West Kalimantan, Indonesia, and Sarawak, Malaysia. Unlike North Kalimantan’s frontier crossings, it lies on Borneo’s western land border.
Sabah: Sabah is a Malaysian state in northeastern Borneo, bordering North Kalimantan. The shared land and sea frontier shapes movement between the province and Malaysia.
Tanjung Selor: Tanjung Selor is the capital of North Kalimantan and the seat of Bulungan Regency. The provincial government is based in this town, rather than in Tarakan.
Indonesian provincial autonomy: Indonesian provincial autonomy is the system through which provinces exercise powers delegated by the national government. Decentralization provided the political framework for creating North Kalimantan.
Nunukan–Tawau ferry: The Nunukan–Tawau ferry is a sea route linking Nunukan in Indonesia with Tawau in Sabah, Malaysia. It supports cross-border travel and trade from North Kalimantan.
Sarawak: Sarawak is a Malaysian state in northwestern Borneo, bordering North Kalimantan. Its border connects North Kalimantan’s interior to Malaysian Borneo.
Bulungan Regency: Bulungan Regency is an administrative division of North Kalimantan on northeastern Borneo. It contains Tanjung Selor and occupies a central place in the province’s administration.
Law No. 20 of 2012: Law No. 20 of 2012 is the Indonesian statute that established North Kalimantan as a province. This law formally separated the province from East Kalimantan.
