North Ossetia–Alania

A federal republic of Russia in the North Caucasus, bordering Georgia and centered on Vladikavkaz. Its population includes Ossetians and Russians, and its history reflects the region’s Caucasian and Russian connections.

Vladikavkaz: The capital and largest city of North Ossetia–Alania, located in the Terek River valley. The republic’s government, transport links, and cultural institutions are concentrated in its capital.
Alania: A medieval kingdom and political formation associated with the ancestors of modern Ossetians in the central Caucasus. Its name survives in the republic’s official title and in Ossetian historical memory.
