North Pole

The North Pole is the northernmost point on Earth’s surface, where the planet’s rotational axis intersects the Arctic Ocean. It is distinct from the magnetic and geomagnetic poles, whose positions are defined by Earth’s magnetic field.

Arctic Ocean: The ocean surrounding the North Pole, largely covered by sea ice. The geographic North Pole lies in this ocean, on drifting sea ice.
Polar day: A period when the Sun remains above the horizon for at least 24 hours in polar regions. At the North Pole, continuous daylight lasts roughly from the March equinox to the September equinox.
Fridtjof Nansen: A Norwegian explorer who led the 1893–1896 Fram expedition across the Arctic Ocean. His expedition tested the theory that ocean currents could carry a ship across the polar basin.
Polar navigation: Navigation in high-latitude regions, where converging meridians and magnetic variation complicate route-finding. Near the pole, compass directions and conventional map grids become difficult to use.
Arctic Circle: The southern boundary of the region where the Sun can remain above or below the horizon for 24 hours. The North Pole lies deep inside the Arctic Circle, where polar day and night last about six months.
Polar night: A period when the Sun remains below the horizon for at least 24 hours in polar regions. At the North Pole, continuous darkness lasts roughly from the September equinox to the March equinox.
Robert Peary: An American explorer who claimed to have reached the North Pole in 1909. His claim became the most prominent early assertion of reaching the pole, though its accuracy remains disputed.
Arctic amplification: The tendency for the Arctic to warm faster than the global average. Changes in sea ice around the pole make it a prominent site for observing amplified warming.
North Magnetic Pole: The location in the Northern Hemisphere where Earth’s magnetic field points vertically downward. It is a moving magnetic location, not the fixed geographic endpoint of Earth’s rotation axis.
Sea ice: Frozen seawater that floats on the ocean surface. The North Pole sits on sea ice that drifts with winds and currents.
