North Pyongan Province

North Pyongan Province is a province in northwestern North Korea, bordering China along the Yalu River and facing the Yellow Sea.

Yalu River: A river forming much of the border between China and North Korea before flowing into the Yellow Sea. The river marks the province’s northern boundary with China.
China–North Korea border: The international boundary separating China from North Korea, running largely along the Yalu and Tumen rivers. North Pyongan contains a major western crossing on this boundary.
Eight Provinces of Korea: The traditional provincial division of Korea established during the Joseon dynasty. North Pyongan’s name and territorial lineage descend from this older system.
Korean War: A war fought from 1950 to 1953 between North Korea and South Korea, with major international involvement. Fighting and military operations affected this northwestern border region.
South Pyongan Province: A province in western North Korea adjoining North Pyongan to the south. It shares the historic Pyongan name but has a different position and administrative center.
Yellow Sea: A marginal sea of the western Pacific between mainland China and the Korean Peninsula. North Pyongan’s western coast faces this sea.
Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge: A road-and-rail bridge linking Dandong, China, with Sinuiju, North Korea. It carries a major share of cross-border traffic through the province.
North Pyongan Province (Korean Empire): A province created in 1896 when the old Pyongan Province was divided into northern and southern parts. It established the north–south division that shaped the modern province.
Korean Armistice Agreement: The 1953 agreement that halted large-scale fighting in the Korean War without establishing a peace treaty. It left North Pyongan inside the continuing division of the peninsula.
Chagang Province: A mountainous province in northern North Korea bordering China and adjoining North Pyongan to the east. Its inland terrain contrasts with North Pyongan’s Yellow Sea coast.
