Northeast China Plain

A broad, fertile lowland in northeastern China, formed chiefly by the Songhua, Nen, and Liao river systems. It is also known as the Manchurian Plain.

Songhua River: A major river in northeastern China that flows westward into the Amur River system. Its basin forms the plain’s central and northern lowlands.
Northeast China: A region of China comprising Liaoning, Jilin, and Heilongjiang provinces. The plain is the region’s principal lowland and agricultural heartland.
Manchuria: A historical geographic region of northeastern Asia, largely within modern northeastern China. The plain is commonly called the Manchurian Plain because it occupies Manchuria’s central lowlands.
North China Plain: A broad lowland in northern China formed mainly by sediment from the Yellow River and neighboring rivers. It is another major Chinese agricultural plain, but lies south of the Yan Mountains.
Nen River: A river in northeastern China that joins the Songhua River near Harbin. Its broad basin contributes to the plain’s northern extent.
Chinese corn production: The cultivation of maize for food, animal feed, and industry in China. The plain is one of China’s major maize-growing regions.
Songliao Basin: A large sedimentary basin in northeastern China between the Greater Khingan and Lesser Khingan ranges. Its subsiding basin underlies much of the plain and accumulated thick sediments.
Songnen Plain: A lowland in northeastern China between the Songhua and Nen river systems. It is the central-northern subregion often distinguished within the larger plain.
Liao River: A river system flowing through Liaoning Province to the Bohai Sea. Its basin forms the plain’s southwestern sector.
Chinese soybean production: The cultivation of soybeans in China for food, feed, and oil. Its fertile soils and summer growing season favor soybean cultivation.
