Knowra Northeast India Northeast India Northeast India is a region of eastern India comprising Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura. It is connected to the rest of India by a narrow corridor and borders several South and Southeast Asian countries.
Assam : An Indian state in the Brahmaputra valley, known for tea, riverine landscapes, and diverse communities. Its river valley forms the region’s largest population and transport corridor.
Brahmaputra : A major transboundary river that flows through Tibet, India, and Bangladesh. Its valley is the region’s principal east–west corridor through Assam.
British Raj : The period of direct British colonial rule over much of the Indian subcontinent, from 1858 to 1947. Colonial administration and borders shaped the region’s modern political geography.
Bodo people : An ethnolinguistic community concentrated in Assam and neighboring areas. Bodo political movements have influenced autonomy and territorial arrangements in Assam.
Look East Policy : An Indian foreign-policy initiative, begun in the early 1990s, to strengthen ties with East and Southeast Asia. The policy cast the region as a potential land bridge to Southeast Asian markets.
Arunachal Pradesh : An Indian state in the eastern Himalayas, bordering Bhutan, China, and Myanmar. Its high mountain terrain shapes the region’s northern frontier.
Siliguri Corridor : A narrow strip of Indian territory connecting the northeastern states to the rest of India. This land link concentrates road, rail, and strategic connections to the region.
Partition of India : The 1947 division of British India into the independent states of India and Pakistan. Partition severed older routes and placed East Pakistan between the region and much of India.
Naga people : A group of Indigenous communities living across parts of northeastern India and northwestern Myanmar. Naga identities and political claims cross state and international borders.
Act East Policy : India’s policy, announced in 2014, to deepen engagement with East and Southeast Asia. Its infrastructure and diplomacy give the region a prominent role in India’s eastern outreach.
