Northern and Southern Dynasties

A period of political division in China from 420 to 589, when southern and northern dynasties ruled concurrently until the Sui reunified the country.

Six Dynasties: A historical period in China marked by a succession of dynasties centered in the south, conventionally dated 220–589. This broader periodization groups the southern regimes within the era of division.
Sixteen Kingdoms: A period of competing states in northern China from 304 to 439, many founded by non-Han peoples. Its prolonged warfare preceded Northern Wei’s consolidation of northern China.
Emperor Xiaowen of Northern Wei: A Northern Wei ruler who reigned from 471 to 499 and advanced policies of cultural and administrative sinicization. His reforms strengthened the northern state while changing its ruling elite.
Yongjia migration: The large-scale movement of northern Chinese elites and populations southward during the early fourth century. Migration helped expand southern populations and strengthened the political world of the southern courts.
Tang dynasty: A Chinese dynasty that ruled from 618 to 907 and oversaw a powerful, cosmopolitan empire. Tang institutions inherited developments from the Sui reunification that ended this period.
Northern Wei: A dynasty that ruled much of northern China from 386 to 534 and promoted political and cultural integration. Its unification of the north made it the era’s most consequential northern regime.
Jin dynasty (266–420): A Chinese dynasty that reunified the country in 280 before losing control of the north and falling in 420. The Jin court’s southern survival preceded the first independent southern dynasty.
Emperor Wu of Chen: The founding emperor of the Chen dynasty, who ruled from 557 to 559. He established the final southern regime of the divided era.
Buddhism in China: A major religious tradition in China, transmitted from South Asia and adapted within Chinese societies. Buddhist institutions and ideas flourished under both northern and southern regimes.
Sinicization: The adoption of Chinese language, institutions, or cultural practices by non-Han peoples and societies. Northern Wei policies made cultural integration a defining legacy of northern rule.
