Northern Ireland peace process

The negotiations, agreements, and political institutions that helped end armed conflict in Northern Ireland and sustain peace while addressing the conflict’s causes.

The Troubles: A conflict in Northern Ireland from the late 1960s to 1998 involving republican and loyalist paramilitaries, state forces, and civilians. The peace process sought to end this conflict and address its political divisions.
Good Friday Agreement: The 1998 agreement establishing a political settlement based on power-sharing, consent, and cooperation across Ireland and between Britain and Ireland. It is the central settlement produced by the negotiations.
John Hume: An Irish nationalist politician who led the Social Democratic and Labour Party and helped develop dialogue-based approaches to peace. His negotiations with Sinn Féin helped shape a political route away from violence.
Northern Ireland Assembly: The devolved legislature established under the 1998 agreement to make laws and scrutinize government in Northern Ireland. It institutionalized local democratic government after the agreement.
Ulster Workers' Council strike: A 1974 general strike in Northern Ireland that brought down the power-sharing Executive established by the Sunningdale Agreement. Its success demonstrated how organized opposition could defeat an earlier negotiated arrangement.
Northern Ireland civil rights movement: A movement that campaigned against discrimination and for civil rights in Northern Ireland during the 1960s. Its protests exposed grievances that the later negotiations had to confront.
Belfast Agreement institutions: The Assembly, Executive, North-South Ministerial Council, and British-Irish Council established under the 1998 agreement. These bodies put the settlement’s shared-government and cooperation arrangements into operation.
David Trimble: A Ulster Unionist Party leader who negotiated the 1998 agreement and served as Northern Ireland’s first minister. His participation brought a major unionist party into the settlement.
North-South Ministerial Council: A body through which ministers from Northern Ireland and Ireland coordinate policy and cooperation. It gave practical form to the agreement’s cross-border strand.
Operation Motorman: A 1972 British Army operation that dismantled no-go areas controlled by republican groups in Northern Ireland. It illustrates the security-first approach that preceded the later political strategy.
