Northern Region, Nigeria

The Northern Region was one of Nigeria’s three federated regions before the 1967 state reorganization. It covered the northern part of the country and was administered from Kaduna.

Northern Nigeria Protectorate: A British protectorate established over much of present-day northern Nigeria and incorporated into colonial Nigeria in 1914. Its territory formed the principal basis of the later Northern Region.
Northern Region House of Assembly: The elected legislative chamber of Nigeria’s Northern Region. It made regional laws and debated the government’s policies.
Ahmadu Bello: A Nigerian politician who served as premier of the Northern Region from 1954 until his death in 1966. He was the region’s dominant political leader during its final decade.
Nigerian Civil War: The 1967–1970 war between Nigeria’s federal government and the secessionist Republic of Biafra. The state creation that ended the region preceded the war and formed part of its political setting.
Amalgamation of Nigeria: The 1914 merger of the Northern and Southern Nigeria protectorates into one British colony and protectorate. It brought the region’s predecessor territory into a single Nigerian administration.
Northern Region House of Chiefs: A legislative chamber representing traditional rulers in the Northern Region. It gave emirs and other chiefs a formal role in regional legislation.
Abubakar Tafawa Balewa: Nigeria’s prime minister from independence in 1960 until his death in 1966. His national leadership was closely linked to the Northern People’s Congress.
States of Nigeria: Nigeria’s subnational federal units, which replaced the country’s regions beginning in 1967. The first states were carved from the Northern Region and the other two regions.
Richard Constitution: Nigeria’s 1946 constitutional framework, which formalized regional divisions and created a Northern Region. It established the region as a distinct unit in colonial Nigeria.
Premier of the Northern Region: The head of government of Nigeria’s Northern Region under its parliamentary system. The premier led the region’s executive and was accountable to its legislature.
