Northern Sea Route

The Northern Sea Route is a maritime corridor through Arctic waters along Russia’s northern coast, linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. It is governed by Russian rules and is navigable for limited periods without extensive icebreaker support.

Arctic sea ice: Sea ice that forms and melts seasonally across the Arctic Ocean. Its extent and thickness determine which sections are passable and when.
Suez Canal: An artificial waterway in Egypt connecting the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea. It is the established alternative for many Europe–Asia voyages, though distance comparisons depend on ports.
Vitus Bering: A Danish-born navigator who led Russian expeditions to explore the Arctic and Pacific in the eighteenth century. His expeditions helped establish knowledge of the route’s eastern approaches.
Arctic amplification: The faster rate of warming in the Arctic than the global average. It contributes to changing sea-ice conditions while reflecting the climate pressures intensified by Arctic development.
Northwest Passage: A group of Arctic sea routes through the Canadian Arctic Archipelago connecting the Atlantic and Pacific. It is the other principal Arctic passage, running through Canadian rather than Russian waters.
Icebreaker: A ship designed to navigate through ice-covered waters by breaking or clearing ice. Icebreakers extend the route’s navigable season and assist vessels in heavy ice.
Yamal LNG: A liquefied natural gas project on Russia’s Yamal Peninsula. Its exports use Arctic shipping links, including the Northern Sea Route.
Great Northern Expedition: A series of Russian explorations of Siberia and the Arctic coast conducted from 1733 to 1743. Its surveys mapped extensive sections of the coastline later traversed by the route.
Black carbon: Light-absorbing soot produced by incomplete combustion of fossil fuels and biomass. Deposited on snow and ice, it can accelerate melting near shipping and industrial activity.
Transpolar Sea Route: A proposed central Arctic Ocean shipping route crossing near the North Pole. Unlike the coastal Northern Sea Route, it would cross open central Arctic waters.
