Northern Thailand

Northern Thailand is the mountainous region in the north of Thailand, including Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. Its history and culture are strongly shaped by the Lanna kingdom and its successors.

Lanna Kingdom: A kingdom centered on Chiang Mai that flourished across much of northern Thailand from the thirteenth century. Its political and cultural legacy shaped the region’s distinctive identity.
Ping River: A major river in northern Thailand that flows through Chiang Mai and joins the Nan River to form the Chao Phraya. Its valley has supported agriculture, transport, and settlement around Chiang Mai.
Mangrai: A Tai ruler who founded the Lanna Kingdom and established Chiang Mai as its capital in 1296. His conquests and foundation of Chiang Mai began the kingdom central to northern history.
Kawila: A ruler of Chiang Mai who restored the city and helped reestablish Lanna rule after Burmese occupation. His resettlement and rebuilding efforts revived Chiang Mai in the late eighteenth century.
Khao soi: A northern Thai curry noodle dish typically served with egg noodles, coconut curry broth, and crispy noodles. Its flavors and ingredients are closely associated with Chiang Mai and northern Thai cooking.
Chiang Mai: A city in northern Thailand that served as the Lanna Kingdom’s capital and remains the region’s largest urban center. It was the kingdom’s capital and remains a major center of northern Thai life.
Kok River: A river that rises in Myanmar and flows through Chiang Rai before joining the Mekong in Laos. It links northern Thai settlements with the Mekong basin across national borders.
Lan Na chronicle: A historical chronicle tradition recording rulers, religious foundations, and events of the Lanna Kingdom. Its accounts preserve local perspectives on the region’s early political history.
Princess Dara Rasami: A Lanna princess who married King Chulalongkorn and became a prominent figure in Siamese royal life. Her life illustrates the political integration of Lanna elites into the Siamese court.
Yi Peng: A northern Thai festival held around the full moon of the twelfth lunar month, known for lantern traditions. Its public celebrations make Lanna ritual and festival culture visible in Chiang Mai.
