Northern Wei

A Chinese dynasty founded by the Tuoba Xianbei that ruled much of northern China from 386 to 535. Its rulers unified the north and pursued major reforms, including adoption of Chinese political and cultural practices.

Tuoba: A Xianbei people whose ruling house founded the Northern Wei dynasty. The Tuoba ruling house established Northern Wei and shaped its early identity.
Emperor Daowu of Northern Wei: The Northern Wei ruler who founded the dynasty’s imperial state and established its early capital at Pingcheng. His campaigns and state-building turned the Tuoba polity into a northern empire.
