Novaya Zemlya

Novaya Zemlya is a Russian Arctic archipelago between the Barents and Kara seas, consisting chiefly of the islands Severny and Yuzhny. It is known for its remote polar environment and Soviet nuclear testing.

Severny Island: The northern island of Novaya Zemlya, separated from Yuzhny Island by the Matochkin Strait. It forms the archipelago’s northern half and contains extensive glaciated terrain.
Tsar Bomba: A Soviet thermonuclear bomb detonated over Novaya Zemlya on October 30, 1961. Its test was the largest nuclear explosion ever conducted.
Nenets people: An Indigenous Samoyedic people of northern Russia, traditionally associated with reindeer herding and Arctic environments. Nenets communities lived on Novaya Zemlya before Soviet-era relocation and military use.
Nuclear fallout: Radioactive particles deposited from the atmosphere after a nuclear explosion. Atmospheric tests at Novaya Zemlya contributed radioactive material to Arctic environments.
Yuzhny Island: The southern island of Novaya Zemlya, separated from Severny Island by the Matochkin Strait. It is the archipelago’s larger inhabited area and borders the Barents Sea.
Novaya Zemlya nuclear tests: A series of Soviet atmospheric and underground nuclear weapons tests conducted at Novaya Zemlya from 1955 to 1990. Testing transformed the archipelago into one of the Soviet Union’s principal nuclear proving grounds.
Willem Barentsz: A Dutch navigator and explorer whose late-sixteenth-century Arctic voyages sought a northeastern route to Asia. His 1596 expedition reached Novaya Zemlya and helped establish European knowledge of the archipelago.
Arctic military strategy: The use of military forces and infrastructure to secure interests in the Arctic region. The archipelago’s position and test facilities have given it enduring strategic value.
Matochkin Strait: A narrow strait dividing Severny and Yuzhny islands in Novaya Zemlya. It is the principal geographic boundary between the archipelago’s two main islands.
Novaya Zemlya effect: An optical phenomenon in which Arctic atmospheric refraction makes the Sun appear above the horizon before sunrise. The phenomenon takes its name from observations reported during a polar expedition near the archipelago.
