Novgorod Republic

A medieval state centered on Novgorod that governed much of northwestern Russia from the 12th century until Moscow annexed it in 1478.

Veche: A popular assembly in medieval Rus' cities that deliberated on public affairs and could elect or dismiss officials. Novgorod's assembly claimed authority over major political decisions and the selection of princes.
Kievan Rus': A federation of East Slavic and Finnic territories ruled by the Rurikid dynasty, centered on Kyiv from the late ninth century. Novgorod emerged within this wider polity before its regional rulers gained greater independence.
Hanseatic League: A network of merchant towns and trading communities that dominated commerce across northern Europe in the later Middle Ages. German merchants connected Novgorod's export trade to markets around the Baltic and North Sea.

Peterhof (Novgorod): The Hanseatic League's trading compound in Novgorod, where German merchants conducted business and lived under regulated conditions. Peterhof housed the foreign merchants central to Novgorod's Baltic commerce.
Ivan III: Grand Prince of Moscow from 1462 to 1505, who expanded Muscovite power and ended Novgorod's independence. His campaigns and annexation brought the republic under Moscow's rule in 1478.
Vladimir-Suzdal: A northeastern Rus' principality whose rulers built power through princely authority and control of key territories. Its more centralized princely rule contrasts with Novgorod's strong civic institutions.
