Nubian Desert

The Nubian Desert is a hyper-arid region of northeastern Sudan and southeastern Egypt, east of the Nile and west of the Red Sea hills. It is part of the Sahara and includes extensive rocky plateaus and wadis.

Sahara: The world's largest hot desert, spanning much of North Africa. The Nubian Desert forms the Sahara's eastern reaches.
Desert pavement: A ground surface covered by closely packed stones left after finer sediment is removed. Wind and runoff winnow fine material from broad parts of the desert.
Nubian Shield: An ancient geological province of northeastern Africa composed largely of Precambrian igneous and metamorphic rocks. Its mineral-bearing rocks underlie parts of the desert and its eastern highlands.
Abu Hamed: A town in northern Sudan on the Nile, near the river's great bend. Its position anchors a major Nile-side passage through the desert.
Eastern Desert: A desert region between the Nile Valley and the Red Sea, chiefly in Egypt. It continues north of the Nubian Desert across the same Nile-to-Red-Sea corridor.
Aeolian processes: The erosion, transport, and deposition of sediment by wind. Wind redistributes sand and dust across the arid landscape.
Gold mining in ancient Egypt: The extraction of gold from mines in ancient Egypt, including deposits in the eastern desert regions. Gold-bearing terrain made routes across the desert economically significant.
Berenice Troglodytica: An ancient Egyptian Red Sea port, also known as Berenike, founded in the Ptolemaic period. Routes from the Nile crossed desert terrain to reach this port.
Red Sea Hills: A rugged mountain range and upland belt running along the western side of the Red Sea. These highlands mark the Nubian Desert's eastern boundary.
Flash flood: A sudden, short-lived flood caused by intense rainfall over a small area. Infrequent storms can send fast flows through normally dry wadis.
