Nuclear magnetic moment

A nucleus’s magnetic dipole moment measures the strength and direction of its magnetic dipole. It arises from nuclear spin and, for charged constituents, their orbital motion.

Nuclear spin: The intrinsic angular momentum carried by an atomic nucleus. The magnetic moment is linked to nuclear spin and is often reported in units of spin.
Angular momentum: A conserved physical quantity describing rotational motion and intrinsic rotation. Nuclear magnetic moments are related to angular momentum through a gyromagnetic ratio.
Hyperfine structure: Small energy-level splittings caused by interactions between nuclear and electronic magnetic moments. The nuclear moment contributes directly to atomic hyperfine splitting.
Electric dipole moment: A vector measure of the separation of positive and negative charge in a system. It describes charge separation rather than the nuclear magnetic dipole.
Nuclear g-factor: A dimensionless factor relating a particle’s magnetic moment to its angular momentum. It specifies the proportionality between a nucleus’s spin and magnetic moment.
Proton: A positively charged subatomic particle found in atomic nuclei. Its charge and intrinsic magnetic moment contribute to a nucleus’s total moment.
Mössbauer spectroscopy: A spectroscopy method based on recoil-free resonant absorption of gamma rays by atomic nuclei. Magnetic hyperfine interactions reveal nuclear moments and local magnetic fields.
Nuclear electric quadrupole moment: A measure of a nucleus’s nonspherical electric charge distribution. It captures nuclear shape information distinct from magnetic dipole strength.
Zeeman effect: The splitting or shifting of energy levels in an external magnetic field. A field couples to the nuclear moment and shifts nuclear energy levels.
Neutron: A neutral subatomic particle found in most atomic nuclei. Despite its zero net charge, its internal structure gives it a magnetic moment.
