Nuclear spin

Nuclear spin is the intrinsic angular momentum of an atomic nucleus, arising from its protons and neutrons. It is quantized and gives nuclei characteristic magnetic moments.

Nuclear magnetic moment: The magnetic dipole moment associated with an atomic nucleus. Nuclear spin gives rise to this magnetic property, which governs how nuclei respond to magnetic fields.
Proton: A positively charged subatomic particle found in atomic nuclei. Its intrinsic spin contributes to the total angular momentum of a nucleus.
Magnetic resonance imaging: A medical imaging technique that uses nuclear magnetic resonance signals to map tissues. It detects signals from nuclear spins, usually those of hydrogen nuclei in water and fat.
Electron spin: The intrinsic angular momentum of an electron, a fundamental spin-one-half particle. It is another intrinsic spin, but belongs to electrons rather than composite nuclei.
Nuclear magnetic resonance: A phenomenon in which nuclei absorb and re-emit radiofrequency energy in a magnetic field. Its resonance frequencies depend on the spin states and magnetic moments of nuclei.
Neutron: An electrically neutral subatomic particle found in atomic nuclei. Its intrinsic spin is another constituent contribution to nuclear spin.
Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy: A spectroscopy method that uses nuclear magnetic resonance to determine molecular structure and dynamics. Chemical environments shift nuclear resonance frequencies and reveal molecular details.
Orbital angular momentum: Angular momentum associated with a particle’s spatial wavefunction around a reference point. Unlike orbital angular momentum, nuclear spin is intrinsic and does not describe motion around a center.
Nuclear spin quantum number: The quantum number that specifies a nucleus’s total angular momentum in units of the reduced Planck constant. It determines the allowed orientations and number of spin states for a nucleus.
Angular momentum: A conserved physical quantity associated with rotational motion and intrinsic spin. Nuclear spin is the intrinsic, quantized form of angular momentum.
