Nude (art)

A work of art depicting an unclothed human body. The nude treats the body as a subject of artistic representation, often engaging ideals of beauty, vulnerability, power, or sexuality.

Idealization: The artistic shaping of a subject toward an imagined standard rather than literal appearance. Classical nudes often transform particular bodies into images of perfected form.
Ancient Greek Sculpture: Sculpture produced in ancient Greece, including works that shaped later traditions of depicting the human body. Greek sculpture established influential ideals of proportion and heroic male nudity.
Aphrodite of Knidos: A lost fourth-century BCE statue by Praxiteles, famous in antiquity for depicting Aphrodite nude. It helped make the female nude an admired subject in Greek sculpture.
