Number line

A geometric line on which numbers are placed in order, with equal distances representing equal numerical differences. It connects arithmetic order and magnitude to position and distance.

Real number: A number that can be represented by a point on the continuous number line. Real numbers fill the line, including rational and irrational positions.
Inequality: A mathematical statement comparing quantities using relations such as less than or greater than. Left-to-right position shows which real number is greater.
Integer number line: A number line marked at integer values, extending in both directions from zero. Its evenly spaced ticks make integer operations and comparisons visible.
Number line diagram: A drawn representation of numbers as ordered positions along a line. The diagram is a visual artifact; the number line can also mean the underlying mathematical model.
Number line origin: The chosen point on a number line assigned the value zero. The origin anchors positive and negative positions.
Addition: The operation of combining quantities to find their sum. Adding a number corresponds to a directed shift along the line.
Fraction number line: A number line partitioned to locate and compare fractional values. Equal subdivisions show fractions as positions rather than isolated symbols.
Number line plot: A statistical display that places data values as marks along a numerical axis. Unlike the general number line, this plot represents a dataset and its frequencies.
Unit interval: An interval of length one, commonly used as the basic scale between consecutive integers. Its length sets the line’s scale and makes equal numerical steps equal distances.
Subtraction: The operation of finding the difference between quantities or removing one quantity from another. Subtraction can be shown as a displacement from one position to another.
