Numbered Treaties

The Numbered Treaties are eleven agreements made between the Canadian Crown and Indigenous nations from 1871 to 1921, shaping land access, Indigenous rights, and federal obligations across much of Canada.

Royal Proclamation of 1763: A British Crown proclamation that reserved Indigenous lands and required Crown authorization for land cessions. Its Crown-purchase principle shaped the legal framework used to negotiate treaty land cessions.
Treaty rights: Rights arising from agreements between Indigenous nations and the Crown. The Numbered Treaties established specific rights whose interpretation remains contested.
Treaty 1: An 1871 treaty between the Crown and Indigenous nations in what is now southern Manitoba. It was the first agreement in the numbered series.
Alexander Morris: A Canadian politician and lieutenant governor of Manitoba and the North-West Territories from 1872 to 1877. He negotiated Treaties 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 for the Crown.
Treaty Land Entitlement: A process addressing First Nations' claims to reserve land promised under treaties but not fully provided. Census shortfalls left some communities with less reserve land than treaty formulas required.
Rupert's Land: A vast territory claimed by the Hudson's Bay Company until its transfer to Canada in 1870. Its transfer opened western lands to Canadian settlement and treaty-making.
Treaty annuity: A recurring payment promised by the Crown to individuals or communities under some treaties. Annuities were among the Crown's recurring obligations under several numbered agreements.
Treaty 3: An 1873 treaty covering a large area of northwestern Ontario and southeastern Manitoba. Its negotiations included disagreements over the written terms and promised provisions.
Mistahimaskwa: A Cree leader, commonly known as Big Bear, who resisted signing Treaty 6 until 1882. His stance shows that Indigenous leaders assessed treaty terms and timing independently.
Indigenous land claims in Canada: Claims by Indigenous peoples concerning land, title, or obligations arising from Crown actions and agreements. Many claims concern whether treaty promises and land provisions were fulfilled.
