Nunavut

Nunavut is a territory of northern Canada established in 1999, with its capital at Iqaluit. Its creation established a predominantly Inuit jurisdiction across much of the Canadian Arctic.

Nunavut Land Claims Agreement: A 1993 agreement between Inuit of the eastern Arctic and the Canadian government that established land rights and a framework for Nunavut. It provided the settlement and legal framework that accompanied the territory’s creation.
Iqaluit: The capital of Nunavut, located on Baffin Island in the eastern Canadian Arctic. It is the territory’s political and administrative centre.
Nunavut Health Care Plan: Nunavut’s publicly funded health insurance program for eligible territorial residents. It operates across communities where distance and weather complicate access to care.
Inuit self-determination: The pursuit of Inuit authority over political, cultural, and economic decisions affecting Inuit communities. Nunavut’s creation advanced Inuit political control but did not make the territory an Inuit-only government.
Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami: A national organization representing Inuit interests across Inuit Nunangat in Canada. Its predecessor helped advance Inuit political representation and land-claims negotiations.
Baffin Island: An island in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago and the largest island in Canada. Nunavut’s capital and many of its eastern communities are on Baffin Island.
Nunavut Arctic College: A public college serving Nunavut through campuses and community learning centres. It provides postsecondary education and training within the territory.
Indigenous self-government in Canada: The exercise of governing authority by First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples within Canada. Nunavut is a public territorial government with a distinctive Inuit-majority population, not a separate Inuit government.
Nunavut Act: A 1993 Canadian federal law providing for the establishment of Nunavut as a territory. It set the legal process that brought the territory into existence in 1999.
Canadian Arctic Archipelago: A vast group of islands in northern Canada between the mainland and the Arctic Ocean. Its islands make up much of Nunavut’s territory.
