Nuvvuagittuq Greenstone Belt

A metamorphosed Archean rock assemblage on Quebec’s eastern shore of Hudson Bay. Its age is disputed, with proposed dates extending beyond 3.8 billion years.

Isua Greenstone Belt: A Greenland rock sequence containing some of Earth’s oldest widely accepted evidence of ancient crust and life. A better-established ancient rock assemblage provides a comparison for Nuvvuagittuq’s contested antiquity.
Isotope geochemistry: The study of isotope abundances and variations to investigate geological and chemical processes. The belt’s age debate depends on interpreting isotopic measurements in its minerals.

Radiometric age: An age estimate derived from the measured decay of radioactive isotopes in a material. The debate turns on whether measurements date original crust formation or later geological events.
Origin of life: The scientific study of how life first emerged from nonliving chemistry on Earth or elsewhere. If the belt is exceptionally ancient, its possible fossils could constrain how early life appeared.
