Nylon 6

Nylon 6 is a synthetic polyamide made from caprolactam, commonly by hydrolytic ring-opening polymerization. Its repeating units contain six carbon atoms and amide bonds.

Caprolactam: Caprolactam is a seven-membered cyclic amide used as the monomer for Nylon 6. Ring opening converts this monomer into Nylon 6 chains.
Synthetic fiber: A fiber made from chemically synthesized polymers rather than naturally occurring fibrous materials. Nylon 6 is widely spun into synthetic textile and industrial fibers.
Nylon 6,6: A polyamide made from hexamethylenediamine and adipic acid, with six carbon atoms in each monomer-derived segment. It is the major nylon comparator, made from two monomers rather than caprolactam alone.
Paul Schlack: Paul Schlack was a German chemist who developed Nylon 6 at IG Farben in the 1930s. His work established the caprolactam-based polyamide as a distinct commercial nylon.
Hydrolytic ring-opening polymerization: A polymerization process in which water initiates the opening of cyclic monomers and their incorporation into chains. This is the common industrial route from caprolactam to Nylon 6.
Textile: A flexible material made by processing fibers or yarns into fabric or other structures. Nylon 6 fibers are used in clothing, carpets, and technical fabrics.
Nylon 11: A long-chain polyamide commonly made from 11-aminoundecanoic acid or its lactam. Its longer hydrocarbon segments generally give it lower moisture absorption than Nylon 6.
IG Farben: IG Farben was a German chemical conglomerate formed in 1925 from several major chemical companies. Nylon 6 development took place within this company's research organization.
Polyamide: A polymer whose backbone contains repeating amide groups. Nylon 6 belongs to this polymer family because its chain contains amide linkages.
Injection molding: A manufacturing process that forces molten material into a mold, where it cools into a shaped part. Nylon 6 is molded into components such as gears, housings, and fasteners.
