Oasis agriculture

Oasis agriculture is farming in arid regions supported by dependable water from springs, wells, or irrigation systems. It often combines date palms with crops grown beneath their shade.

Oasis: A fertile area in an arid region where water is available at or near the surface. Oases provide the localized water and soils that make this farming possible.
Arid climate: A climate in which long-term precipitation is too low to balance water loss through evaporation. Low rainfall makes dependable water sources essential to cultivation.
Siwa Oasis: An oasis in Egypt’s Western Desert known for date and olive cultivation. Its farms show how local water sources support agriculture in an exceptionally dry setting.
Waterlogging: The saturation of soil with excess water, limiting air available to plant roots. Over-irrigation or poor drainage can waterlog oasis fields.
Rainfed agriculture: Crop production that depends primarily on precipitation rather than supplemental irrigation. Oasis agriculture relies on managed water sources where rainfall alone is insufficient.
Qanat: An underground channel that carries groundwater from an upland source to settlements or fields by gravity. Qanats can deliver irrigation water while limiting evaporation in hot, dry climates.
Groundwater: Water stored beneath Earth’s surface in soil pores and rock fractures. It feeds many springs and wells used to irrigate oasis fields.
Al-Ahsa Oasis: A large cultivated oasis in eastern Saudi Arabia, historically sustained by springs and groundwater. Its extensive palm groves illustrate the scale oasis irrigation can reach.
Salinization: The buildup of salts in soil or water to levels that impair their usefulness. Evaporation can leave irrigation salts behind and reduce crop yields.
Flood recession agriculture: Cultivation on land exposed as seasonal floodwaters recede, using residual soil moisture. It depends on flood cycles rather than an oasis’s localized, dependable water supply.
