Oasis

An oasis is a fertile area within a desert where available water supports vegetation and often human settlement. Its water may come from groundwater, springs, rivers, or managed wells.

Aquifer: An underground layer of permeable rock or sediment that stores and transmits groundwater. Many oases form where groundwater reaches the surface or can be tapped by wells.
Desert: A region receiving very little precipitation, where water scarcity limits plant growth. An oasis is a locally fertile exception within this dry environment.
Oasis agriculture: Cultivation in arid regions using water concentrated at oases. Oasis farmers adapt crops and irrigation to limited, localized water supplies.
Caravanserai: A roadside inn that provided lodging and services for travelers and caravans. Caravanserais near oasis towns supported long-distance travel across arid regions.
Artesian well: A well that draws groundwater from a confined aquifer under pressure. Pressure can bring oasis water to the surface without continuous pumping.
Groundwater: Water held beneath Earth’s surface in soil pores, fractures, and permeable rock. Groundwater is a major source of water for inland oases.
Date palm: A palm species cultivated for its edible fruit, especially in arid regions. Date palms provide food and shade in many traditional oasis farming systems.
Desert trade route: A route across arid terrain connecting settlements, often organized around reliable water sources. Oases determined where travelers could safely pause and replenish supplies.
Spring: A natural place where groundwater flows onto the land surface. Springs supply water directly to some oasis vegetation and settlements.
Water table: The upper boundary of the saturated zone beneath Earth’s surface. A shallow water table can allow plants to reach moisture in an arid setting.
