Oath

An oath is a solemn promise or declaration made with an appeal to divine, legal, or moral authority. It commonly creates a duty to tell the truth or fulfill a commitment.

Promise: A commitment to do or refrain from doing something in the future. An oath gives a promise added solemnity and often formal consequences.
Oath of office: A formal pledge made by a person before assuming a public or institutional role. It binds an officeholder to specified duties or constitutional obligations.
Ancient Greek religion: The religious practices and beliefs of ancient Greek communities. Greek oaths invoked gods as guarantors who could punish false pledges.
Sacrament: A sacred rite understood in some Christian traditions as a means of divine grace. An oath may be religiously solemn without being classified as a sacrament.
Affirmation: A solemn declaration made in place of an oath, without invoking a deity. Legal systems may accept affirmations from people who decline religious oaths.
Witness oath: A formal pledge by a witness to give truthful evidence. Courts use it to establish a witness’s obligation before testimony.
Roman law: The legal system developed in ancient Rome and transmitted through later legal traditions. Roman legal practice helped formalize oaths as instruments of evidence and obligation.
Conscientious objection: Refusal to comply with a requirement because it conflicts with deeply held moral or religious beliefs. Some people object to oath-taking on grounds of conscience or faith.
Testimony: A formal statement of evidence given by a witness, usually under oath. An oath can establish the duty of truthfulness before testimony begins.
Hippocratic Oath: A traditional medical oath expressing ethical duties associated with practicing medicine. It is a prominent professional example of an oath tied to conduct.
