Oblast

An oblast is a large administrative region used in several countries of Eastern Europe and Central Asia, typically below the national level and above districts.

Administrative division: A geographic unit created by a government to organize territory and public administration. An oblast is one type of administrative division within a country's territorial hierarchy.
Moscow Oblast: A federal subject of Russia that surrounds, but does not include, the city of Moscow. It illustrates the distinction between an oblast and a separately administered federal city.
Russian Empire: A multinational empire ruled by the Romanov dynasty from 1721 until the Russian Revolution of 1917. Imperial reforms helped establish oblast as a name for large administrative territories.
Governorate: A territory governed by an appointed or elected governor, used as an administrative unit in several countries. Governorate is a comparable regional label with a different historical and national distribution.
Federal district: A grouping of subnational regions used for coordination or oversight in some federal states. Russia groups its oblasts and other federal subjects into larger federal districts.
Lviv Oblast: A region of western Ukraine whose administrative center is the city of Lviv. It is a Ukrainian example of an oblast organized around a regional center.
Soviet Union: A socialist federation of republics that existed from 1922 to 1991. Soviet administration used oblasts extensively and shaped many current regional boundaries.
Province: A major subnational division of a country, with powers and status varying by national system. Province is a broader international counterpart rather than a direct legal equivalent of oblast.
Raion: A district-level administrative unit used in several countries of Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Raions commonly form a lower administrative tier within an oblast.
Almaty Region: A region in southeastern Kazakhstan, known as Almaty Oblast before Kazakhstan adopted the Kazakh term for its administrative regions. Its former name shows how oblast terminology has changed in Central Asian states.
