Obligate intracellular parasite

An organism that can reproduce only inside a host cell, relying on the host for resources or cellular functions it cannot supply independently.

Host cell: A cell that provides an environment for another organism or infectious agent. It is the cellular environment in which obligate intracellular parasites reproduce.
Virus: An infectious agent that replicates only within living cells using host machinery. Viruses are the best-known obligate intracellular agents, though their status as organisms is debated.
Facultative intracellular parasite: A parasite that can reproduce both inside host cells and outside them. It contrasts with organisms whose reproduction is restricted to host cells.
