Observational cinema

Observational cinema is a documentary approach that follows events as they unfold while minimizing filmmaker intervention, narration, and staged action.

Direct cinema: A documentary movement that sought to record events with minimal intervention, often using lightweight cameras and synchronized sound. Its American practitioners shared observational cinema’s restraint but often pursued immediacy and access.
Robert Drew: An American journalist and filmmaker who helped develop direct cinema in the early 1960s. His production group made influential observational films during the movement’s formation.
