Occupation of Japan

The Allied-led administration of Japan from 1945 to 1952, directed chiefly by the United States under General Douglas MacArthur. It oversaw demilitarization, political and social reforms, and Japan’s transition to sovereignty.

Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers: The Allied occupation headquarters in Japan, led by Douglas MacArthur and responsible for implementing occupation policy. Its directives supplied the main machinery for governing Japan.
Japanese surrender: Japan’s acceptance of Allied terms in August 1945, followed by the formal surrender on September 2. Surrender created the conditions for Allied military administration.
Land reform in Japan: Postwar measures that transferred farmland from landlords to tenant farmers and limited large landholdings. Occupation-era reform sharply weakened landlordism and expanded owner-cultivation.
Douglas MacArthur: The U.S. general who served as Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers in occupied Japan from 1945 to 1951. He exercised broad authority over the occupation’s administration and reforms.

Labor unions in Japan: Organizations of Japanese workers that bargain collectively and represent members in labor disputes. Occupation policies initially expanded union rights, before later restrictions.
Shigeru Yoshida: A Japanese diplomat and politician who served as prime minister for much of the occupation’s later years. He negotiated with occupation authorities while prioritizing economic recovery and security ties with the United States.
Allied occupation of Austria: The four-power military administration of Austria from 1945 until the country regained independence in 1955. Austria’s joint occupation and later neutrality offer a different path from Japan’s U.S.-led settlement.
