Ocean dynamics describes how forces such as wind, gravity, and Earth’s rotation move seawater and shape currents, waves, and mixing.

Geostrophic current: A large-scale current in which pressure-gradient and Coriolis forces nearly balance. This balance explains much of the ocean’s broad, persistent circulation.
Fluid dynamics: The study of how liquids and gases move and respond to forces. Ocean dynamics applies fluid-motion principles to seawater.
El Niño–Southern Oscillation: A coupled tropical Pacific climate pattern involving ocean temperature, atmospheric circulation, and irregular phases. Its changing currents and heat distribution produce global climate effects.

Coastal upwelling: The rise of deeper water near a coast, commonly driven by wind-driven surface transport offshore. It connects circulation mechanics to nutrient supply and productive fisheries.
Kuroshio Current: A strong western boundary current flowing northward east of Taiwan and Japan. It is the Pacific counterpart to the Gulf Stream’s boundary-current dynamics.
Submesoscale ocean dynamics: The study of ocean motions from roughly hundreds of meters to a few kilometers across. These rapidly evolving features may strongly affect vertical exchange but remain difficult to observe.
