Odorant

An odorant is a volatile chemical compound capable of activating olfactory receptors. Its molecular features help determine which receptors respond and how an odor is perceived.

Olfactory receptor: A sensory protein in olfactory neurons that responds to particular odorant molecules. Binding between odorants and these receptors begins olfactory signaling.
Volatility: A substance's tendency to enter the gas phase under given conditions. Volatility determines whether a compound can travel through air to the nose.
Gas chromatography–olfactometry: An analytical method that separates volatile compounds and evaluates their odors with a human assessor. It helps identify which separated compounds contribute an odor.
Pheromone: A chemical signal released by an organism that affects behavior or physiology in members of its species. Some pheromones are odorants, but the term specifies a communicative biological role.
Combinatorial coding (olfaction): The principle that odor identity is represented by patterns of activity across multiple olfactory receptors. It explains how many odorants can be distinguished with a limited receptor repertoire.
Olfactory transduction: The cellular process that converts odorant detection into electrical activity in olfactory neurons. It carries receptor activation onward as a neural signal.
Chemical structure: The arrangement of atoms and bonds in a molecule. Molecular shape and functional groups influence receptor interactions.
Olfactometry: The measurement of odor detection, intensity, or character using sensory or instrumental methods. It quantifies how odorants are detected and perceived.
Taste molecule: A chemical compound that activates taste receptors and contributes to gustatory perception. Taste molecules act on gustatory receptors rather than defining olfactory stimuli.
Odor mixture: A combination of volatile compounds perceived together as an odor. Mixtures can mask, blend, or reorganize the perceived qualities of their component odorants.
