Off-road vehicle

An off-road vehicle is designed or adapted to travel over unpaved, rugged, or otherwise difficult terrain. Its tires, suspension, clearance, or drive system help it maintain traction and avoid damage away from prepared roads.

Four-wheel drive: A drivetrain that can deliver engine power to all four wheels. Driving all four wheels can improve traction on loose or uneven ground.
All-terrain vehicle: A small motorized vehicle, commonly straddled by its rider, designed for varied terrain. ATVs are compact off-road vehicles used for recreation, work, and access.
Traction: The grip that allows a tire or track to transmit force to the ground. Off-road movement depends on maintaining grip on loose, wet, or uneven surfaces.
Passenger car: A motor vehicle designed primarily to carry people on roads. Passenger cars typically prioritize paved-road comfort and efficiency over rugged-terrain clearance.
Trail riding: Recreational travel on designated or established routes using vehicles suited to unpaved terrain. It is a common way off-road vehicles are used for recreation.
Ground clearance: The distance between a vehicle’s lowest point and the ground. More clearance helps a vehicle pass over rocks, ruts, and other obstacles.
Utility task vehicle: A side-by-side motor vehicle with seats, steering wheel, and utility or recreational uses. UTVs carry passengers or cargo across terrain that ordinary road vehicles may not handle.
Wheel travel: The distance a wheel can move upward and downward relative to a vehicle’s body. Greater wheel travel can help tires follow uneven ground without lifting off it.
Crossover SUV: A passenger vehicle with sport-utility styling, usually built on a car-based unibody platform. Many crossovers offer limited rough-road ability rather than specialized off-road equipment.
Search and rescue: The organized search for people in danger and their removal to safety. Off-road vehicles can reach remote locations that are difficult to access on foot or by road.
