Ogata Kōrin

Ogata Kōrin (1658–1716) was a Japanese painter and lacquer artist of the Edo period, known for bold decorative compositions and his role in the Rinpa school.

Irises (Ogata Kōrin): A pair of six-panel folding screens by Kōrin depicting blue irises beside a stream. Its repeated flowers and gold ground exemplify Kōrin’s decorative approach.
Tarashikomi: A Japanese painting technique in which wet pigments are allowed to flow into one another before drying. Kōrin used its pooled, irregular textures to suggest natural surfaces such as bark and water.
