Ohio Country

A contested eighteenth-century region around the Ohio River and its tributaries, claimed by France and Britain and inhabited by Indigenous nations.

Ohio River: A major river flowing west from Pennsylvania to the Mississippi River. Its watershed defined the region’s geography and made control of its routes strategically valuable.
Fort Duquesne: A French fort built at the forks of the Ohio River in 1754. It anchored French control at the region’s most consequential river junction.
French and Indian War: The North American theater of the Seven Years’ War, fought from 1754 to 1763. The Ohio Country dispute helped ignite the war that ended French rule in mainland North America.
Louisiana (New France): France’s vast North American colony, extending from the Great Lakes region to the Gulf of Mexico along the Mississippi system. French claims connected the Ohio Country to a larger interior corridor toward the Mississippi.
