Ohio River

The Ohio River is a major eastern United States river formed by the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers. It flows west to the Mississippi River.

Allegheny River: A river in Pennsylvania and New York that flows southwest to join the Monongahela River at Pittsburgh. It forms the Ohio River’s northern headstream at Pittsburgh.
Ohio: A U.S. state named after the Ohio River, on whose south shore it lies. The river gave the state its name.
Shawnee: An Indigenous people of the Ohio Valley and surrounding regions, with communities extending across the eastern woodlands. Shawnee communities lived throughout the river region and defended their homelands.

Iroquoian languages: A family of Indigenous languages spoken historically in eastern North America. The river’s name derives from an Iroquoian word often rendered as “good river.”
Mingo: An Indigenous community in the Ohio Valley, formed from diverse peoples including Iroquoian-speaking groups. Mingo communities occupied parts of the valley during colonial-era conflicts.
Flatboat: A broad, shallow-draft boat historically used to carry goods and passengers downstream on inland rivers. Flatboats carried settlers and produce down the Ohio toward the Mississippi.
Underground Railroad: A network of people and routes that helped enslaved people escape to free states and Canada. The river was a dangerous crossing from slave states into free-state territory.
