Oil palm

Oil palm is a tropical tree cultivated for clusters of fruits that yield palm oil from their fleshy outer layers and palm kernel oil from their seeds.

Oil palm fruit: The fleshy fruit of oil palms, containing an oil-rich mesocarp and a hard-shelled seed. Its mesocarp and kernel are the separate raw materials for palm oil and kernel oil.
Palm oil refining: The purification and modification of crude palm oil for food and industrial uses. Refining makes the crude oil suitable for distinct end products.
Deforestation in Indonesia: The clearing and degradation of forests across the Indonesian archipelago. Oil palm expansion has been one driver of forest loss in Indonesia.
Soybean oil: A vegetable oil extracted from soybean seeds and widely used in food, feed, and industry. It is a major substitute whose lower yield per hectare can shift land demand.
Palm oil: An edible vegetable oil extracted from the fleshy mesocarp of oil palm fruit. It is pressed from the fruit’s outer, oil-rich tissue.
Palm oil fractionation: The separation of palm oil into liquid olein and solid stearin fractions. Its fractions provide different melting and texture properties for products.
Deforestation in Malaysia: The clearing and degradation of forests in Malaysia, especially on Borneo and the Malay Peninsula. Plantation expansion has contributed to forest conversion in major producing regions.
Coconut oil: An edible oil extracted from the kernel of mature coconuts. It shares some uses with palm kernel oil but comes from a different crop.
Palm kernel oil: A vegetable oil extracted from the kernel inside an oil palm fruit’s seed. It comes from the seed rather than the fruit’s fleshy mesocarp.
Biodiesel: A renewable diesel substitute made from fatty-acid esters derived from oils or fats. Palm oil can be converted into biodiesel, linking plantations to transport fuel.
