Oliver Cromwell

Oliver Cromwell (1599–1658) was an English military and political leader who helped defeat Charles I and ruled as Lord Protector from 1653 to 1658.

Charles I of England: King of England, Scotland, and Ireland from 1625 until his execution in 1649. Cromwell’s armies fought the king, whose execution cleared the way for republican government.
New Model Army: The professional parliamentary army established in 1645 during the First English Civil War. Cromwell’s cavalry leadership and later command made this army the main instrument of his power.
Battle of Naseby: The decisive 1645 battle in which Parliament’s New Model Army defeated Charles I’s main field army. Cromwell commanded cavalry on Parliament’s winning side, helping secure victory in the First Civil War.
