Oliver E. Williamson

Oliver E. Williamson (1932–2020) was an American economist who developed transaction cost economics to explain how firms, markets, and other institutions organize economic activity.

Transaction cost economics: An economic theory explaining how the costs of contracting and exchange shape the choice between markets, firms, and other governance arrangements. Williamson developed this framework into a theory of economic organization.
Make-or-buy decision: The choice between producing an input within an organization and purchasing it from an external supplier. This choice is Williamson's central case of selecting a governance structure.
Ronald Coase: An economist whose work on the nature of the firm and social cost reshaped institutional economics. Coase posed the question about firms that Williamson answered with transaction cost analysis.
Antitrust: Laws and policies that address monopolization, collusion, and other restraints on competition. Transaction cost analysis helps assess whether integration suppresses competition or economizes on contracting.
