Oliver Heaviside

Oliver Heaviside (1850–1925) was an English electrical engineer, mathematician, and physicist who developed operational calculus and recast Maxwell’s equations in vector form.

Maxwell's equations: A set of equations describing how electric and magnetic fields are generated and interact. Heaviside reduced Maxwell’s original formulation to the compact vector equations now widely used.
Operational calculus: A method that treats differentiation as an algebraic operator to solve differential equations. Heaviside developed and applied this method to transient electrical circuits.
James Clerk Maxwell: A Scottish physicist whose theory unified electricity, magnetism, and light. Heaviside reorganized Maxwell’s electromagnetic theory into a more usable mathematical form.
John Perry: An Irish engineer and mathematician who promoted applied mathematics and scientific education. Perry supported Heaviside’s recognition and helped secure a Civil List pension for him.
Quaternion: A four-dimensional number system extending complex numbers, used in mathematics and physics. Heaviside rejected quaternion methods in favor of vector notation for electromagnetic theory.
Transmission line: A structure that guides electromagnetic waves between locations, such as a coaxial cable or wire pair. Heaviside developed the mathematical theory used to understand signal distortion and propagation along long lines.
Heaviside step function: A function that is zero before a chosen point and one afterward. It represents sudden switching events in the circuit problems Heaviside analyzed.
Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism: James Clerk Maxwell’s two-volume work, published in 1873, presenting his electromagnetic theory. Heaviside drew on this dense work while developing his own vector formulation.
George Francis FitzGerald: An Irish physicist known for work in electromagnetism and the FitzGerald contraction hypothesis. FitzGerald engaged with Heaviside’s electromagnetic ideas and helped connect him to scientific peers.
Vector notation: A mathematical notation that represents quantities with magnitude and direction as vectors. Heaviside’s streamlined use of vectors displaced much of the quaternion formalism in electromagnetism.
