Oliver Lodge

Oliver Lodge (1851–1940) was a British physicist and writer whose work spanned electromagnetic waves, radio technology, and psychical research.

Radio: The wireless transmission and reception of signals using electromagnetic waves. Lodge’s experiments and patents contributed to the development of wireless signaling.
Electromagnetic waves: Waves of coupled electric and magnetic fields that propagate through space. Lodge experimentally investigated the waves predicted by electromagnetic theory.
James Clerk Maxwell: A Scottish physicist whose equations unified electricity and magnetism and predicted electromagnetic waves. Lodge helped explain and popularize Maxwell’s electromagnetic theory.
University of London: A federal research university in London, founded in 1836. Lodge studied science at University College London, then part of the University of London.
Society for Psychical Research: A British organization founded in 1882 to investigate alleged paranormal phenomena. Lodge served as president and pursued investigations through this society.
Marconi's wireless telegraphy: Guglielmo Marconi’s system for transmitting telegraph signals by radio waves. Lodge’s work on tuned circuits became part of disputes over Marconi’s wireless patents.
Spark-gap transmitter: A radio transmitter that generates electromagnetic waves through electrical sparks across a gap. Lodge used spark discharges to produce waves in laboratory demonstrations.
Oliver Heaviside: An English electrical engineer and mathematician who reformulated Maxwell’s equations and advanced transmission-line theory. Their overlapping work on electromagnetic theory highlights contrasting styles of mathematical physics.
University College London: A public research university in London, founded in 1826 as University of London. Lodge studied physics there under John Tyndall.
Raymond or Life and Death: A 1916 book by Oliver Lodge describing purported communications from his deceased son Raymond. The book made Lodge’s spiritualist convictions widely visible after a personal bereavement.
