Olympic Mountains

The Olympic Mountains are a mountain range on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula, distinguished by rugged peaks, exceptionally wet temperate rainforests, and extensive protected wilderness.

Olympic Peninsula: A large peninsula in northwestern Washington, bordered by the Pacific Ocean, Strait of Juan de Fuca, and Puget Sound. The mountains occupy the peninsula’s interior and shape its climate and drainage.
Orographic lift: The upward movement and cooling of air forced over elevated terrain, often producing precipitation. Moist Pacific air rises over the mountains, creating a strong west-to-east rainfall gradient.
Mount Olympus (Washington): A 7,980-foot glaciated peak and the highest mountain in Washington’s Olympic Mountains. Its summit glaciers and prominence make it the range’s defining high point.
Olympic Wilderness: A federally designated wilderness area protecting a large, roadless portion of Olympic National Park. It preserves much of the range’s remote interior from motorized development.
Olympic National Park: A U.S. national park in Washington that protects much of the Olympic Mountains and surrounding ecosystems. Its boundaries encompass most of the range’s central wilderness.
Rain shadow: A relatively dry region on the leeward side of a mountain range, caused by precipitation loss on its windward side. The eastern Olympics receive less precipitation after Pacific air crosses the crest.
Hoh Rainforest: A temperate rainforest in Olympic National Park, nourished by heavy precipitation on the peninsula’s western side. It exemplifies the lush forest environment on the Olympics’ wet western slopes.
Makah people: An Indigenous people whose homeland is at the northwestern tip of Washington’s Olympic Peninsula. Makah history and continuing relationships are part of the peninsula’s human geography.
Olympic National Forest: A federally managed forest surrounding much of Olympic National Park on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula. Its lands protect mountain slopes beyond the national park boundary.
Glaciation: The formation and movement of glaciers and their effects on landscapes. Past and present glaciers have shaped high valleys and peaks in the range.
