Olympic movement

The international network of organizations, athletes, and other participants guided by the Olympic Charter. It promotes Olympism and organizes the Olympic Games.

Olympic Charter: The foundational document that sets out the rules, principles, and organization of the Olympic movement. It establishes the movement’s governing framework and defines its members’ responsibilities.
Olympic Games: An international multisport event held in summer and winter editions under the authority of the IOC. The Games are the movement’s most visible recurring event.
Pierre de Coubertin: A French educator and historian who founded the modern Olympic movement and helped establish the IOC. His campaign for an international sporting festival launched the modern movement.
Olympic boycotts: Political decisions by countries or athletes to withdraw from or refuse participation in Olympic Games. Boycotts expose the limits of the movement’s claims to remain above politics.
International Olympic Committee: The independent international organization that leads the Olympic movement and oversees the Olympic Games. It is the movement’s central governing body.
Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games: A temporary organization responsible for preparing and staging an Olympic Games in its host city. It turns the movement’s event plans into a specific edition of the Games.
International Olympic Committee founding: The 1894 creation of the IOC at the Paris Congress for the Re-establishment of the Olympic Games. The founding gave the movement a permanent international governing body.
Olympic bidding: The process through which cities seek selection to host an edition of the Olympic Games. Host selection brings the movement into contact with local politics, public spending, and scrutiny.
National Olympic Committee: A country-level organization recognized by the IOC to develop and represent the Olympic movement nationally. National committees connect the movement to athletes and sports organizations within each country.
Olympic qualification: The rules and competitions that determine which athletes and teams may participate in the Olympic Games. Qualification links international sports rules to the athletes who reach the Games.
