Olympic sports

Olympic sports are sports included in the program of a particular edition of the Olympic Games. The program changes over time and can differ between Summer and Winter Games.

Olympic Games: An international multisport competition held in Summer and Winter editions under the Olympic Movement. Olympic sports form the competition program of these Games.
Olympic program: The set of sports, disciplines, and events scheduled for a particular Olympic edition. It is the edition-specific lineup in which Olympic sports are defined.
1896 Summer Olympics: The first modern Olympic Games, held in Athens in 1896. Its program established the early model for modern Olympic sports.
Paralympic sports: Sports included in the program of a particular edition of the Paralympic Games. They belong to a separate Games program, despite overlapping with Olympic sports.

Olympic event: A medal competition within an Olympic sport or discipline. Events are the specific competitions that make up a sport’s Olympic program.

1900 Summer Olympics: The second modern Olympic Games, held in Paris in 1900. Its expanded program included sports and events absent from the inaugural Games.
World Games: An international multisport event featuring sports and disciplines not included in the Olympic program. The World Games provide a major stage for sports outside the Olympic lineup.
Olympic medal: An award given to athletes who place among the top finishers in an Olympic event. Medal status gives events within Olympic sports a defining public outcome.
