Olympic wrestling

Olympic wrestling is the set of wrestling competitions contested at the Summer Olympic Games. Its two styles are freestyle and Greco-Roman, with weight classes for men and women.

Freestyle wrestling: A wrestling style that permits attacks on an opponent’s legs and the use of the legs in offense and defense. One of the two Olympic styles, contested by men and women.
Ancient Olympic Games: A series of athletic festivals held at Olympia in ancient Greece, traditionally dated from 776 BCE. Ancient wrestling was part of the athletic tradition later invoked by the modern Olympic movement.
Women's freestyle wrestling: The women's form of freestyle wrestling, contested internationally in weight classes. Women’s wrestling entered the Olympic program at the 2004 Athens Games.
Beach wrestling: A wrestling style contested on sand in a circular arena, with rules distinct from mat wrestling. It is an international wrestling discipline but not part of the Summer Olympic program.

Greco-Roman wrestling: A wrestling style that prohibits holds below the waist and the use of the legs to execute holds. The other Olympic style, contested by men.

Olympic program: The collection of sports and events included in a particular edition of the Olympic Games. Wrestling’s place on this program has depended on International Olympic Committee decisions.
Professional wrestling: A staged form of athletic entertainment that combines wrestling-inspired performance with scripted outcomes. Unlike Olympic wrestling, it is entertainment rather than a medal sport governed by competitive results.
Kaori Icho: A Japanese freestyle wrestler who won four consecutive Olympic gold medals from 2004 to 2016. Her record captures the ascent of women’s freestyle wrestling on the Olympic stage.
