Omani Empire

The Omani Empire was a maritime empire ruled by Omani dynasties, centered in Oman and at times controlling territories along the East African coast and Persian Gulf.

Portuguese Oman: Portuguese-controlled coastal strongholds in Oman, established during Portugal’s sixteenth-century expansion into the Indian Ocean. Omani forces displaced Portuguese control from Muscat in 1650, opening the way for imperial expansion.
Omani navy: The naval forces maintained by Omani rulers to defend their coasts and project power across regional sea routes. Its ships enabled campaigns against Portuguese strongholds and protection of maritime commerce.
Sultan bin Ahmad: An Omani ruler who established his authority in the late eighteenth century and was killed in 1804. His reign consolidated Omani power before the succession struggles that followed his death.
Sultanate of Zanzibar: An East African sultanate established in 1856 when Zanzibar became politically separate from Oman. Its creation marked the empire’s formal division into distinct Omani and Zanzibar polities.
Ya'aruba dynasty: An Omani ruling dynasty that expelled the Portuguese from Oman and expanded Omani power during the seventeenth century. The Ya'aruba unified Oman and launched the empire’s first major maritime campaigns.
Dhow: A traditional sailing vessel used across the western Indian Ocean, typically with a lateen sail. Dhow traffic carried goods and people through the empire’s coastal networks.
Said bin Sultan: The Omani sultan who ruled from 1806 to 1856 and made Zanzibar a major center of his empire. His long reign marked the empire’s greatest reach and the relocation of its political center.
Anglo-Zanzibar Treaty of 1890: An agreement that made Zanzibar a British protectorate while recognizing German claims to parts of the East African coast. British protection curtailed Zanzibar’s sovereignty after its separation from Oman.
Muscat: A port city on the Gulf of Oman that became the principal political and commercial center of the Omani state. Its harbor anchored Omani naval power and Indian Ocean trade.
Zanzibar: An island off the coast of present-day Tanzania that became a major Omani political and commercial center. Omani rulers made Zanzibar a key base for trade and authority in East Africa.
