Omdurman

Omdurman is a city in Sudan on the west bank of the Nile, opposite Khartoum. It is the country’s most populous urban center and a historic center of Sudanese culture and politics.

Battle of Omdurman: A 1898 battle in which Anglo-Egyptian forces defeated the Mahdist army near Omdurman. The battle established British-Egyptian control over the city and helped shape its modern history.
Nile: A major African river formed by the White Nile and Blue Nile, flowing north to the Mediterranean Sea. The river separates Omdurman from Khartoum and structures the city’s geography.
Abdallahi ibn Muhammad: A Sudanese leader who succeeded Muhammad Ahmad as head of the Mahdist State. He governed from Omdurman until the Mahdist defeat in 1898.

Hamed al-Nil Mosque: A mosque in Omdurman associated with Sudanese Sufi religious practice. Its Friday gatherings are a visible expression of the city’s religious traditions.
Sudanese Revolution: A popular uprising beginning in 2018 that led to the removal of Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir. Omdurman was among the cities where protests challenged the ruling government.
