Omertà

Omertà is a code of silence associated with the Sicilian Mafia and other organized-crime groups. It forbids cooperation with authorities and discourages disclosure of criminal activity.

Cosa Nostra: The Sicilian Mafia, an organized-crime network built around local clans and shared traditions. Omertà is most closely associated with this organization and its members.

Criminal subculture: Shared norms and practices that develop among people involved in crime. Omertà operates as a norm within a wider criminal subculture.
Gabelloto: A leaseholder or estate manager in Sicily who often acted between landowners and agricultural workers. Rural power brokers helped create conditions in which private protection and silence could matter.
