Omnivory

Omnivory is a feeding pattern in which an organism consumes both plant and animal matter. Its breadth can vary by species, life stage, and available food.

Herbivory: A feeding pattern based primarily on consuming plants or algae. It contrasts with omnivory by relying chiefly on plant matter.
Trophic level: An organism’s position in a food chain, based on how it obtains energy. Omnivores can occupy several trophic positions by eating plants and animals.
Brown bear: A large bear species native to parts of Eurasia and North America. Its diet shifts among plants, insects, fish, and mammals with season and location.
Dietary niche: The range of foods an organism uses and its role in obtaining them. A broad dietary niche can let omnivores exploit more kinds of resources.
Carnivory: A feeding pattern based primarily on consuming animals. It contrasts with omnivory by relying chiefly on animal matter.
Food web: A network of feeding relationships among organisms in an ecosystem. Omnivores connect plant-based and animal-based pathways in food webs.
Wild boar: A widespread wild pig native to Eurasia and North Africa. It eats roots, fruits, invertebrates, and small vertebrates, often disturbing soil.
Ecological generalist: A species able to use a wide range of resources or habitats. Many omnivores are dietary generalists, though omnivory alone does not guarantee generalism.
Digestive system: The organs and processes that break down food and absorb nutrients. Different plant and animal foods place distinct demands on digestion.
Seed dispersal: The movement of seeds away from the parent plant. Omnivorous animals can disperse seeds while consuming fruits and other foods.
