One-liner

A very brief joke, usually delivered as a single sentence with a compact punch line. Its humor depends on rapid setup and payoff, often through surprise or wordplay.

Punch line: The closing part of a joke that delivers its comic payoff. A one-liner concentrates its payoff in the sentence’s final turn.
Joke: A verbal or physical act intended to produce amusement, often through surprise or incongruity. The one-liner is a compact form of joke.
Stand-up comedy: A comic performance in which a comedian addresses an audience directly, usually with prepared material. One-liners are a familiar unit of written and performed stand-up material.
Anecdotal comedy: Comedy built around a narrated incident, often developed through characters, events, and a payoff. Unlike a one-liner, an anecdote usually needs a sequence of events to reach its joke.

Incongruity theory: A theory that explains humor through a perceived mismatch between expectations and outcomes. Many one-liners get their effect from a sudden shift in interpretation.
Double entendre: A phrase with two interpretations, often one innocent and another suggestive. A single ambiguous phrase can carry a one-liner’s entire comic turn.
